Sunday School
Sunday School is the lifeblood of our program at Brainerd UMC with classes available for all ages. Our Sunday School classes serve as a means of learning about the scriptures, discovering our spiritual gifts for ministry, using those gifts in service to the community and also enjoyable social activities. Our Sunday School classes are involved in the ministry and mission of the church and are actively looking for ways to be in ministry to the world.
Most of our Sunday School Classes meet at 9:45 AM on Sunday morning. Exceptions are noted in the individual class information.
The Asbury Class has four excellent teachers, on a rotating basis, that leads the class with presentations based on the bible. The class regularly participates in many church activities, contributes to local and national charities and enjoys several social gatherings throughout the year. This class consists of older adults.
The Cornerstone Class was founded in 1982. This class is composed of enthusiastic and caring adults who share fellowship through spiritual and social activities. The class sponsors a variety of church based service projects throughout the year. Lessons are based on both Biblical and current events with open and lively discussion encouraged. The ages range from the early 40's and up with children ages elementary school to post college. All are welcome!
The Crossroads Class is an inter-generational class devoted to ongoing Bible study for personal renewal and training for ministry. They currently use Adult Bible Study quarterly curriculum resources.
The Friendship Class has been a part of BUMC for over 50 years. At one time we had approximately 300 members. Our class meets in the McFerrin Chapel which was the original sanctuary of BUMC. Our ages vary between 55 – 90, with most members being senior citizens, a mix of couples and singles. We study the International Lesson taught by a different teacher each Sunday of the month.
While the Harmony Class was initially formed to accommodate the Sunday morning schedule of Chancel Choir members, it has become a class for others who like the time arrangement. The class meets from 9:30 -10:00 each Sunday morning in the choir room, providing a half-hour of Bible study, prayer and fellowship. The Harmony Class is appealing not only to choir members but especially to those who worship at the early service and do not have a Sunday school class to attend immediately after the service. All ages are invited to join this unique class.
The Kingsbury Class is a class for couples and singles in their later 40’s to early 60’s. This discussion class uses a variety of study materials and teachers to meet the needs of the diverse group. Class meetings are held in members’ homes the 2nd Friday of each month.
The McFerrin Class has more than forty active members ranging in age from the late 50s to the late 80s and are couples and singles. McFerrins are involved actively with our time and our money in various Chattanooga charities and our church. Our Sunday meeting location is in the new multi-purpose room upstairs down the hallway from the elevator. We are just inside the backdoor that leads to the church's rear parking lot.
The Open Door Class is an inter-generational class of friendly folks. A mixture of singles and couples attend with a rich diversity of ages represented in the class. This lively bunch offers Bible centered lessons with spirited group discussion.
The Seekers Class is an active group of adults ranging in age from mid-20’s to early 40’s. This class offers open discussion lessons often utilizing video or other sources of Bible based topics. The Seekers Class reaches out by working in BUMC’s many outreach programs.
The Young Professional Class

The Wesley Class offers lecture type lessons with four rotating teachers and uses the International Sunday School literature. Its main theme is to teach the Word and offer support and friendship to it’s members and the church. Most members are 65 and up. This class also reaches out and offers loving care to our homebound members.
