Brainerd in Music Ministry
Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth… Isaiah 42:10
The Choirs of Brainerd United Methodist Church serve to lead the congregation in the worship of Almighty God. Choir membership provides opportunity for musical training and Christian formation of children, youth, and adults. Music is a vital part of every worship service at Brainerd. Both the Bible and our United Methodist tradition celebrate music as integral to the life of the community at worship. The Chancel Choir is but one way for us to fulfill our pledge to serve and praise God, and to make Christ known to the world.
Do I need to audition to sing in the Chancel Choir?
There are no auditions to sing. If you are interested in the adult choir and would like to talk with Ron Starnes, our Music Director, about exploring this ministry, contact him at 423-698-6951.
Do I need to read music?
Yes, it does help to have some basic music reading skills since some of the music might be difficult to learn “by ear”. Questions? Again, just call Ron.
When does the choir rehearse?
Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6:45 – 8:15 p.m. Choir members are urged to arrive on time and stay for the entire rehearsal. The choir also gathers at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings for a final run-through of that day’s music.
What is the attendance policy?
Members are encouraged to attend as often as they possibly can. Choir members should use their own discretion as to whether or not they are ready to sing on Sundays. Regular attendance is needed to build team spirit and a musical ensemble.
What happens on Sunday mornings?
The Choir meets at 10:00 to robe and rehearse the music before the worship service begins.
Does the Chancel Choir sing at other special services?
Yes. In addition to regular Sunday services, the Choir sings on Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and other special seasonal events. There are occasionally special services and concerts throughout the year.
Is there a dress code on Sundays?
On Sundays when the choir processes, dark shoes are preferred. Please do not wear perfumes or colognes because some singers are allergic to them.
How do I get music?
Music is distributed at Wednesday rehearsals. After we have sung the music in worship, members are asked to properly remove the music from their binders for the music librarian to re-file.
Are there solo and small ensemble opportunities?
Yes. Solos and ensembles are organized and rehearsed under the leadership of the music director. Singers are responsible for arranging their own rehearsal times with the accompanists, at their convenience.
Does the Chancel Choir sing during the summer?
The Choir rehearses and sings year round, but there is a summer break from Wednesday rehearsals during July and early August. We are committed to the ongoing schedule of providing choral music every Sunday, as our witness to faithful service.
Children’s Choir
Children in 1st through 5th grades are offered music instruction during the Sunday School hour at 9:45 each Sunday morning. Highly qualified elementary music teachers provide music instruction for singing and age appropriate music activities.
Music for Youth
The youth of the church provide their own music experiences in their youth meetings, camp settings, and the Oasis worship service.
The Brainerd Bells
As a five-octave hand bell choir, the Brainerd Bells is a fine ensemble of adult hand bell ringers who meet each Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. for their weekly rehearsal. The Brainerd Bells ring in the traditional worship service several times throughout the year and offer a special concert during the Christmas season and in the spring. For more information, please contact the director Bill Acuff at 423-698-6951.
